Characters:
- Victor Frankenstein- Victor is the protagonist and narrator for most of the story. While studying in Ingolstadt, Victor created an intelligent but horrifying monster. Scared of the monster, Victor fled. Victor keeps his creation of the monster a secret for a long time because he feels guilty and ashamed of what he has created. He feels helpless because he does not know how to stop the monster.
- The monster- The monster is the giant, ugly creation of Victor Frankenstein. He is very intelligent and sensitive. He attempts to live a normal life like a human, but everyone who sees him rejects him. He wants more than anything a female companion, but Victor won't make him one. Feeling lonely and rejected, the monster seeks revenge on his creator and all humans.
- Henry Clerval- Henry is the childhood friend of Victor and friend throughout the story. He travels with Victor and helps him in times of need. He is Victor’s companion on Victor’s lonely and depressing journey, until the monster got his revenge. Henry is the second victim of the monster.
- Elizabeth- Elizabeth was an orphan and adopted into the Frankenstein when she was a baby. She was about 4 years younger than Victor and she grew up with him. They spend a lot of time together and she takes care of him and the rest of the family. Elizabeth waited for Victor to come home because she wanted to be with him.
- Alphonse Frankenstein- Alphonse is Victor’s father. He cares for Victor and always tries to make him feel better. He helps Victor in times of need and tells him to be with Elizabeth.
- William Frankenstein- William, the youngest brother of Victor, is the first victim of the monster. He was in the woods when the monster found him and strangled him. The death of William hurts Victor and makes him regret making the monster.
- Robert Walton- Walton is an arctic sailor, who finds Victor stranded on a piece of ice. Walton listens to Victor's entire story and wants to help him. Walton is very ambitious and seeks an adventure. He records Victor's entire story in letters to his sister.
- Justine Moritz- Justine was brought into the Frankenstein family at a young age. She helps with the chores around the house and helps care for the family. She is blamed and executed for the murder of William, even though she is innocent.
- Beaufort- Beaufort is a merchant and good friend of Alphonse. Also, he is the father of Caroline.
- Caroline Beaufort- Caroline is the mother of Victor and son of Beaufort. When Beaufort dies, Caroline is taken into the Frankenstein family and later marries Alphonse. She dies of Scarlett Fever when Victor is about seventeen. She is very caring and always helps everyone in need.
- M. Kirwin- Kirwin is the magistrate who accuses Victor of murder and later helps Victor prove his innocents.
- M. Waldman- Waldman, a professor of Chemistry at Ingolstadt, starts Victor's interests in science. They discuss chemistry and other sciences, and he gets Victor thinking about the origin of life.
- M. Krempe- Krempe is also a professor at Ingolstadt. He tells Victor that the science he has been reading is worthless, and that he should learn about more important sciences.
- De Lacey- De Lacey, the father of Felix and Agatha, is the head of the house observed by the monster. He had been robbed of his fortune and forced to live in poverty. De Lacey's blindness allows him to recognize the monster's sincerity despite his appearance. The monster learns how to communicate and write by watching the De Lacey family.
- Felix- Felix, the son of De Lacey, is a hard-working and caring young man. He sends the monster running after he sees him in the cottage.
- Agatha- Agatha, the daughter of De Lacey, is often sad, but always cares for her father and brother.
- Safie- Safie, a foreign woman, is engaged to Felix. Felix teaches her how to write and speak French. The monster listens to these lessons and learns to speak as well.
